Computers that may
understand
May 9, 2000 @

Microsoft
has been producing more and more complex software over the years and they have had a team
working on the technology of language processing. The group has, over the past nine years,
has made progress in their mission to make computers process various languages. The
goal is to make computers not only obey your commands but also to have the computer
literally understand your words. The computer has a hard time processing
languages due to many factors. The computer has to recognize many factors, such as raising
of the voice, pronunciation, and the appropriate associations of items that go along with
that word, that determine what a word means in a language. The smallest factor can become
the biggest hurdle.
The team has made progress in their endeavors and has also created and explored other
areas in language processing. The team's past achievements have been incorporated into
some of Microsoft's programs. Their latest project is MindNet, whose ultimate goal is to
allow users to type in what they want done and then have the computer do the assigned
task. MindNet will make associations between words that have been used before and its
database of dictionary listings so that the program can learn and comprehend what the
input means and also respond correctly to it.
The team has made progress but we are a long way away from speaking directly to our
computers and have them actually understand us. |

MANILA --
The ground-floor flat in a lower middle-class Manila neighborhood where the "Love
Bug" was said to originate is an unlikely setting for the birth of the most virulent
virus ever to hit the world's computers.
More than two dozen plainclothes officers from the Philippine National Bureau of
Investigation thoroughly searched the dilapidated two-room flat Monday after receiving
search warrants, and arrested Reomel Ramones, a 27-year-old man living there.
They were also seeking his live-in 23-year-old girlfriend, Irene de Guzman, who was at
work at the time. The couple were named in two separate search warrants for the same
address. Read More at: Wired |

'ILOVEYOU' Bug: The Conspiracy
May 6,

The cops
are closing in on the suspected author of the "ILOVEYOU" worm, but not everyone
is convinced they are looking for the right person.
While law enforcement agencies scoured the capital of the Philippines looking for the
young man known as Spyder and whose first name may be Michael, amateur
sleuths plugged in their paranoid radars and starting tracking a list of more likely
culprits.
The wannabe flatfoots have largely eschewed such cumbersome details as facts to back up
their claims. Instead, they have relied loosely on the theory of Occam's razor, which
states that the best explanation of an event is the simplest one. Read More at: Wired |
