Cacheman
is a utility which tweaks the disk cache settings and prevents frequent swapping of the
data to disk resulting in an improved performance and stability.
What's the problem with the Windows Disk Cache?
VCACHE is drive cache Windows allocates that can be often gobble up 25-40% of your
installed memory. By default, Windows places NO LIMIT on how large it can be. Wonderful...
After accesing large files, like video clips, VCACHE expands to an often huge size and
then is very stingy about giving that memory back to the system.
This is NOT the Windows swapfile and is NOT controllable from
System/Performance/Filesystem/Troubleshooting.
On machines with <128 megs VCACHE can (and often does) cause low memory crashes when
using memory intensive software like Photoshop, Media Studio Pro, Premiere, etc. etc.
This is especially the case when you've been accesing large files or previewing your
project.
On machines with <64 megs it can make life intolerable.
It can also cause playback problems in low memory situations. |

WinRamTurbo releases
allocated memory that has been fragmented and left behind once an application has been
shutdown which eliminates trash build up, keeps memory free and clean and ends inefficient
or sporadic memory access as seen when switching among the different concurrent running
applications.
WinRamTurbo optimizes the file and disk cache to allow sustained rapid access of cached
data. A disk cache (also called Virtual Cache or just simply vcache in Win95/98) is
important for improving hard disk performance. This is because the disk cache caches or
stores data from the hard disk in the much faster RAM so that if a program requires that
piece of data, it can just access the disk cache for it, instead of loading from the hard
disk.
The disk cache can also read ahead by copying more data than what the program asked for in
the assumption that the following consecutive data segment will be needed next. These are
some of the methods employed by the disk cache to improve your hard disk's performance.
