RIAA Wins Suit Against MP3.com
April
30, 2000 @ 8:55 - rleonf |

|
After months in the 'MP3 Battle' finally RIAA won
the battle. MP3.com was found liable of copyright infrigement, cause they built an
illegal database of 45,000 CDs, which the company purchased and uploaded to MP3.com's
servers. Robertson said 'we think this is a loss for the labels, because my.mp3.com is a responsible system that protects artists,
'cause users need to load a physical CD that contains the album into their computer to
gain access to the database. MP3.com's CEO says that compared to Napster, they're the good guys. I
completely agree with him. |

A breakup for Microsoft? That's just the
begining. The U.S. Government has submitted a proposal that Microsoft be broken into two
companies: an applications division and a operating systems division, and also has
proposed strict regulations on MS for the next few years... Check it at WonkoSlice and at Wired
News. |

ShellXCity 2020dreams Contest
April
29, 2000 @ 8:35 - rleonf |
 |
There is a contest at Shell Extension
city, here is what it is about:
Designers, engineers, entrepreneurs, and others are all asking where the Internet will be
tomorrow, or next year, or in two years. But what about the really long range questions,
like what it will all look like 20 years down the road? No one seems to be asking this, so
we're going to ask it. And we'll give a prize to the best answer.
Ok, ok, we know the question can't be answered in a factually accurate manner, but we
really don't care about accuracy. We don't want facts. We want high flying thought, and
minds on fire. We want dreamscapes and nightmares, serious ideas and ranting fantasies. We
want vision.
Here's what we'll give you if your vision wins: 1) A well-thumbed copy of Neuromancer by
William Gibson, and 2) The domain name, "Geekcowboy.com," which we've registered
for a year.
The Official Rules are available at Shell
Extension City.

GeeksCentral is back again!!!
April 28, 2000 @

|
Well, I'm back working on the site after a
whole month of inactivity. As many of you know, the cause of this was that my hard disk
died, and I wasn't able to get a new one 'til now. This disaster helped me to have an
excuse to upgrade my old 3GB IDE to a 12GB UltraSCSI (now I need to
upgrade my old Intel 133MHz processor). As you may have noticed, I have completely changed
the look for GeeksCentral. It looks cleaner now. I changed the colors cause I have
received a lot of comments telling me that the design was a little dark, we'll it's
brighter now. Hope you like it. Don't forget to send me your comments
and/or suggestions to the usual place.

Wilmot
from TweakTown writes, 'TweakTown
has been in need of a decent downloads section for sometime now... Well
that wait is now over, so far we have around 50 programs listed and available for direct
download that deal with just about ever aspect of your computer (and expanding as I type
this email), we named the section The Tweaking Toolbox because we couldn't think of anything else and
besides everything else, the name was appropriate and original. There are many different
tweaking programs, ranging from Bios Tweaking programs to DUN Tweakers... how much tweakin
goodness can you get in one page? :)' |

A virus
that Microsoft insists is not a virus jams newsgroups with faked postings. Microsoft
acknowledges the problem, calling it a 'malicious code.' But WebTV has never had a virus,
it says. |

You may
think a mousepad is just some trivial piece to sit under your mouse, but really good ones
can make a difference between being fragged and doing the fragging. With this in mind, 3D Spotlight takes a look at the
Giganta mousepad. |
